My Chosen Final Images.

 

These are the images I have chosen to represent my final piece.

I chose them as I believe they represent the story I was aiming to narrate throughout my work - the story of Jack and Jill.

I had the heads of the models covered as the nursery rhyme is about a king and a queen being beheaded and this symbolises the loss of their head.

Along with the significant symbol, I tried to put an urban twist on the story, creating a modern day tale by dressing the girl up in up-to-date fashion and the same for the boy.

In the very last picture, it is of two hands underneath a water pump - symbolising the well- and the male model is wearing gloves as it represents the different clothing the genders wear.

I chose a couple which one was of white heritage and one of African heritage as i wanted to represent the multi-cultural diversity of modern day.

I have ensured that all the photographs were taken/edited to be portrait so it creates a consistency within my work and I also edited the images into black and white as i feel more emotion is expressed through black and white and I feel it helps achieve the gloominess of modern/urban times.

 

Ideas for final piece.

 

I edited the images in two different ways, one retro style and one in black and white.

I am yet to decide which one I am to use for my final outcome.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Final Piece - Final Statement of Intent

 

For my final piece I have chosen to use an older couple (teens) to do the shoot with as I feel it is more appropriate to the story of Jack and Jill as it is about the story of how a king got be-headed and his wife came "tumbling after".

I plan to take my models to Wollaton Park in Nottingham for the shoot as it provides me with the desirable backgrounds and it also has a wooded area which will be perfect for the images of them on their travels. The park is also situated close by the Wollaton Village which has the water pump which I am using throughout the story as unfortunately it is the only thing the vaguely represents a water well like the one in the nursery rhyme.

I am going to get the female to wear a knee length dress and tights to make her very feminine and up-to-date. I am going to get the male model to wear a very smart shirt and jeans, to give him that smart yet urban feeling.

I am still going for a new modern twist with my images but keeping in line with the fact that I want to portray the origins behind the nursery rhyme, I will do this my getting them to have their head covered which symbolises the be-heading of them when Jack "looses his crown" and Jill came "tumbling after"

 

 

Developments for my Final Piece

 

 

 

This is my development work towards my final piece.

It is an urban twist on the story of Jack and Jill.

I chose the location to half be in a graveyard as I feel this complements the true story behind the nursery rhyme as the story is about the deaths of a kind and his queen.

 I edited the images into black and white as i feel it portrays the feeling i am trying to create

with my work. The images shows the intimate yet innocent love between the couple and with them being in the grave yard, it is as if they are showing what is to come - their death, which co insides with the story.

Idea's for developments

For my development work, I am doing an urban twist on the story of Jack and Jill with having them on the streets however with the location in a village with a church, and therefore a graveyard. It allows me to incorporate the desirable senery into my photographs; not only this but the main feature of the village is the water pump which incorporates perfectly with the nursery rhyme i am working with.
I intend to take a boy and a girl to the village and my plan is to imitate the idea of jack and Jill but with a twist. It will have a sinister feeling and hopefully possess the true meaning behind the rhyme. I have chosen to take the photo's within a graveyard setting as I feel it is most appropiate to the theme of the rhyme and the story it is telling.

Research into Jack and Jill

 

 

Whilst researching my idea of Jack and Jill, I came over this photo shoot by Hunter at Three Nails Photography inspired by the nursery rhyme. I have put these images in my research as I feel I could manipulate them into a way where I could interpret some of the ideas from my researched photographers into a shoot similar to the one below.

I like how the Hunter has literally taken the words of the nursery rhymes and taken them and turned them into images and they are used as a narrative of some sort and whilst looking at the images, you can link each one back to each part of the rhyme.

Research into Jack and Jill

 

Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water
Jack fell down and broke his crown
And Jill came tumbling after.
Up got Jack, and home did trot
As fast as he could caper
He went to bed and bound his head
With vinegar and brown paper

As i have chosen the nursery rhyme Jack and Jill, I felt it was my responsibility to do further research into the nursery rhyme and the true meanings behind it, this would help me develop my ideas and help my reach my final idea.

 

 

The true meanings:

Jack and Jill story - The French (history) connection!
The roots of the story, or poem, of Jack and Jill are in France. Jack and Jill referred to are said to be King Louis XVI - Jack -who was beheaded (lost his crown) followed by his Queen Marie Antoinette - Jill - (who came tumbling after). The words and lyrics to the Jack and Jill poem were made more acceptable as a story for children by providing a happy ending! The actual be headings occurred in during the Reign of Terror in 1793. The first publication date for the lyrics of Jack and Jill rhyme is 1795 - which ties-in with the history and origins. The Jack and Jill poem is also known as Jack and Gill - the Miss-spelling of Gill is not uncommon in nursery rhymes as they are usually passed from generation to generation by word of mouth.

Statement of intent

I am aiming to develop the true identity behind nursery rhymes throughout my work. I have chosen to adopt the nursery rhyme of Jack and Jill throughout this course as I feel it is the most interesting and I can play around with the idea more and interpret it in different ways. I researched the true meanings behind the nursery rhyme so I can expose it throughout my developments. To achieve my idea I will have to do my shoots on locations such as a wooded area for my final piece and using a couple as the main subjects to my photographs. I am taking inspiration from photographers such as Hunter from Three Nails Photography and giving it a twist with the style of Elise Raffa.

Responses to Julie de Waroquier

 

These are my responses in the style of Julie de Waroquier.
I used my little sister as the model as i felt a young girl would be most suitable for the image.
I like the fact that the location of the images has the wall in the background and the black cloth on the floor as I feel it breaks it up and gives the sense of danger, messiness and uncertainties - which relates back to the story of the three blind mice.
I think the posture of the model is very important to not only responding in the style of Julie de Waroquier as it is that what tells the story and states the feelings of the character.

I decided to do this photo as a close up and focus more on the portrait and the posture of the model. to say the model looks calm is an understatement to say the predicament they're hypothetically in.
I used the blind fold as the more traditional link to the nursery rhyme of three blind mice to bring a bit of obviousness to the photograph.
I like how the composition of the photograph means the model is in the centre but yet slightly off straight, it is almost like her body is at an angle and i purposely cut the told of the head and bottom of the legs to give a closer interpretation of the image and i fell it created a greater depth of detail. to achieve this i used a shallow depth of field - this ensured the background was out of focus and the foreground in focus.





For this image I have chosen two different theme effects, one black and white and one more colourful with darker edges. I achieved the darker edges by using a photo editing software to burn the edges of the photo.
I edited the same photo in different colours as I feel the black and white one is better because i feel it tells the story better and you can interpret it easily but the colour one responds to Julie de Waroquier more accurately.








I plan to possibly re-shoot these images as I feel that the background of the images take the impact away and makes the images lose there value. I would probably chose a background such as tree's or bushes or a more suitable background to complement that main subject of the photograph.


Re-shoot

These are the results from the re-shoot i did for my responses to Julie de Waroquier.
I am happier with the outcome of these compared to the other ones because they were flawed in so many ways including the background.
For the re-shoot I went on location to a local park/field to give me a clear and not distracting background. I feel it is them simple changes which have improved the photographs greatly. I then added a black and white filter as I felt it expressed the emotion more readily but I also did one in a colour filter to show the comparisons.

 

 

 

Response to Elise Raffa

 

 

 

 

 

 

This is my response in the style of Elise Raffa's work.

I love the composition I have been able to create with this piece of work, with the subjects being off centre. I used a shallow depth of field to get the two main subjects in focus and the background de-focused - but despite this, the back ground it still fairly focused which I think is good for the purpose of the image because it is about the setting of the image and what is going on.

I chose to respond to this image as I feel it is the one that most responds to my chosen theme of nursery rhymes as it relates to more than one. the first one being peter pumpkin- a tale of how a man held her wife hostage in a large pumpkin deep in the forest. and the other being that of Jack and Jill - a nursery rhyme about the many beheading conducted by Queen Mary during her reign.

I chose to edit the image and change it into black and white as I thought it gave the image a more emotive feel it it acts as an extra narrative to the story creating the sense of darkness and sinister.

This is my responses to Henrique Frazao; I chose to respond to this image as I personally think it represents nursery rhymes as a whole with the real meaning of them, hiding behind an almost pristine white mask - white traditionally associated with cleanliness, holiness and innocence. To achieve the image I took it in the studio with studio lighting. I used a shallow depth of field, therefore a wide aperture to achieve the fact that the face/mask in the mirror is in focus and the rest of the image is not. I chose to make this image black and as I thought this effect gave the image the most impact and improved it greatly. I also played around with the contrast and brightness of the photo to achieve this final product. I like how the mirror has a pattern around it to give it the "pretty" feeling and almost feminine - and therefore sensitive - feeling to the striking reality of the image. I think that maybe there is too much black from the hoody of the person but for the purpose of the image i think it is beneficial as it contrasts to the light background and therefore emphasising the main point of the image - the mask in the camera.
